This article re-examines a debated question concerning the influence of footwear on German Expressionism. Traditionalist views on the artistic motivation of these artists center around social and political upheavals of Weimar Germany leading up to the rise of the National Socialist Party. A relatively new outlook challenges this view using a yet unpublished deathbed interview with the niece of Jon Himmelman, a former studio assistant of Otto Dix and photographs of an extraordinary array of shoes said to have been worn by Dix, George Grosz, Kirchner, and Emile Nolde. A case is made that the consistent use of stylish but ill-fitting footwear by this core group of Expressionists perpetuated a movement which produced paintings as a direct outlet for foot pain. Further evidence compiled by a team of German podiatrist supports this view through analysis of medical records and shoe construction from this period of German History.Click here for full article.
